Pascal Salin

Pascal Salin holds a doctorate in economics and is professor of economics at the university of Paris-Dauphine. From 1994 to 1996, he was president of the prestigious 'Société du Mont Pèlerin'. He has acted as a consultant to the International Monetary Fund, to the government of Niger, to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation and to the Harvard Institute for International Development.

He has written a large number of books and articles, in particular on international finance, taxation, and macro-economics, as well as two books on liberalism for the general public : "Liberalism", and "Frenchmen, do not be afraid of liberalism", published by Odile Jacob. The latter work includes, among others, the subjects that Pascal Salin dealt with at the dinner-debate. He has a regular column in the 'Québécois libre' and contributes occasionally to the 'Monde' and 'Figaro' newspapers.

Pascal Salin is one of our great friends. He had previously come to the 'Cercle' to give a talk on immigration, and to the congress for the bicentenary of Bastiat's birth to present a very original view of the firm, precisely developed from Bastiat's ideas. That view is taken up again in the book by Jacques de Guenin, "The Logic of Liberalism", in the chapter devoted to the firm. He also prefaced the book by Jacques de Guenin on the ATTAC association.

Pascal Salin is probably the world's most esteemed French liberal economist. But as a perfectly well-educated man, his success has not prevented him from remaining very simple and easy to approach. It is always a great pleasure to meet him.

Pascal Salin kindly agreed to speak at the dinner-debate held on December 8, 2007 on the subject "Why one should not be afraid of liberalism".
